Super Bowl XLIX: The Game Decided At The 1-Yard Line

Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks remains one of the most referenced games in modern NFL history. Not because of a blowout or a dominant performance, but because it stayed undecided until the very last snap.

The matchup itself was as clean as it gets. Both teams entered at 12–4, both were top seeded, and both closed as near pick’ems across most sportsbooks. New England’s offense, led by Tom Brady, faced Seattle’s elite defense, creating a classic contrast that bettors largely treated as evenly priced.

For much of the night, Seattle justified that confidence. The Seahawks controlled tempo, built a 10-point lead in the third quarter, and consistently forced New England into longer drives. From a betting standpoint, this created value for live bettors backing the Patriots, as the market began to price in a Seahawks win despite plenty of time remaining.

New England’s fourth quarter surge flipped that script. Brady threw two touchdowns on back-to-back drives, including the go ahead score with just over two minutes remaining. At that point, Patriots moneyline bets and alternate spreads swung sharply, while Seattle backers were suddenly relying on one final possession.

That possession, and the decision that followed, remains one of the most analyzed sequences in sports betting history.

With the ball at the one yard line and under 30 seconds to play, Seattle opted to throw instead of handing the ball to Marshawn Lynch, who had already rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown. Russell Wilson was unable to deliver, and Patriots’ CB Malcolm Butler made the game-clinching interception in the endzone.

That single play reshaped how the game is remembered. For the Patriots, it marked the end of a ten year Super Bowl drought and reinforced Brady’s place among the all time greats. For the Seahawks, it became a moment of lasting debate, not because of effort or execution throughout the game, but because of one decision at the very end.

Now 11 years later, the Patriots and Seahawks are set for a rematch on the game’s biggest stage. Will the Patriots come out on top again or will the Seahawks finally get their revenge?
