BTA Sports Attends WiDS Pittsburgh at Carnegie Mellon

BTA Sports recently attended the Women in Data Science Conference at Carnegie Mellon University, an event that highlighted not only the evolution of data science, but also the importance of creating spaces that empower women in the field.

The environment was intentionally designed to encourage open dialogue. At our table, female professionals from companies like Reddit and SAS sat alongside students, creating a shared space where conversations felt natural and approachable. Students were actively engaged throughout the event. They asked thoughtful questions about career paths, technical challenges, and real-world applications, and received honest, practical insights in return. That kind of direct interaction stood out and made the experience especially impactful.

A Format Built for Connection

One of the most effective aspects of WiDS Pittsburgh was its structure. Rather than following a traditional conference format filled with back-to-back presentations, the event prioritized interaction through small-group discussions and informal networking.

This approach allowed conversations to develop naturally without the pressure of time constraints or rigid schedules. Attendees were able to dive deeper into topics, ask follow-up questions, and build genuine connections. It created an environment where learning felt active instead of passive, and where participants could engage in a more meaningful way.

The format also encouraged participation from everyone in the room. Students felt more comfortable contributing to discussions, and professionals had the opportunity to share their experiences in a more conversational setting. That balance made the event both engaging and productive.

Representation That Matters

Another important element of the event was the presence of women in leadership roles throughout the day. Women were actively involved in organizing the event, leading discussions, and guiding conversations across different sessions.

This visibility added an important dimension to the experience. It showed students a clear picture of what leadership in data science can look like and highlighted the range of opportunities available within the field. The representation felt natural and integrated into the event rather than emphasized for its own sake.

For many attendees, especially students, seeing women lead in technical and professional settings helps make the path forward feel more accessible. It reinforces the idea that there is space to grow, contribute, and lead within the industry.

Why It Matters

For BTA Sports, attending WiDS Pittsburgh reinforced the importance of creating spaces where access and interaction are prioritized. When students and professionals can connect directly, learning becomes more practical, and career pathways become clearer.

Experiences like this help bridge the gap between education and industry. They allow students to better understand how their skills apply in real-world settings while giving professionals the chance to support and guide the next generation of talent. That impact is especially meaningful for women entering the field, where visibility, mentorship, and access to honest conversations can play a critical role in building confidence and long-term growth.

Events like WiDS Pittsburgh play a meaningful role in shaping the future of data science by encouraging collaboration, fostering connections, and creating opportunities for a more inclusive and representative industry.

We are excited to continue engaging with communities and initiatives that support innovation, accessibility, and the continued development of talent across the industry.
