This past weekend brought another strong slate of MLB action, with a few teams making real noise before the All-Star break. The Boston Red Sox and Miami Marlins both delivered statement sweeps, while the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays struggled to finish series strong. Here’s a look at the biggest MLB weekend winners and losers from the July 4th weekend:
Winner: Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox had one of their best weekends of the season, sweeping the Angels with a +12 run differential across all three games. Boston scored 20 total runs while allowing just 8, winning 5-2, 8-1, and 7-5. The offense finished with 28 hits, a .262 team batting average, 5 home runs, and an .809 OPS, giving the lineup enough production to control the series from start to finish.
The pitching staff also did enough to make that offense stand up. Boston allowed only 3 total runs over the first two games, which gave the lineup room to take control early in the weekend. Even when Sunday’s game tightened late, the Red Sox still had enough offense and relief work to finish the sweep. For a team trying to climb back into the American League playoff picture, sweeping a road series is exactly the kind of weekend that can build momentum.
Loser: Texas Rangers
The Rangers had a frustrating stretch against the Tigers, especially after opening with a strong 10-4 win before the weekend. Texas dropped the next two games 3-0 and 6-3, finishing its last three games with 13 runs scored and 13 runs allowed. The overall numbers do not look terrible, with 26 hits, a .252 team batting average, and 5 home runs, but most of that production came in the opener.
The problem was how quickly the offense disappeared once the weekend arrived. Texas managed only 3 hits in Saturday’s shutout loss, then scored just 3 runs in Sunday’s series finale. The pitching staff did not completely collapse, but it also could not give the Rangers enough margin once the bats cooled off. For a team trying to stay near the top of the AL West race, losing back-to-back games to Detroit made this a missed opportunity.
Winner: Miami Marlins
The Marlins had one of the loudest offensive weekends in baseball, sweeping the Athletics with wins of 12-5, 7-2, and 9-8. Miami finished the series with 28 total runs, 40 hits, and a massive .354 team batting average. The power was the biggest story, as the Marlins hit 12 home runs, added 19 extra-base hits, and posted a 1.192 OPS across the three games.
The pitching was not perfect, especially with the Athletics making a late push in the finale, but Miami had already created enough separation with its offense. The biggest pitching highlight came Sunday, when Eury Pérez pitched seven perfect innings before being pulled as a precaution, striking out eight in a game the Marlins eventually held on to win 9-8. This was a huge series for Miami, keeping them right in the NL East mix and giving them one of the most impressive MLB weekend sweeps.
Loser: Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays had a rough weekend in Seattle, losing two of three and getting shut out in back-to-back games. Toronto opened the series with a 2-0 win, but then lost 11-0 and 4-0, finishing the weekend with just 2 total runs and a -13 run differential. The offense managed only 10 total hits across the series, including just 1 hit on Saturday and 3 hits on Sunday.
The pitching gave Toronto a chance in the opener, with Dylan Cease striking out 9 in seven scoreless innings, but the rest of the weekend completely flipped. The Blue Jays allowed 15 runs over the final two games, while the offense failed to score at all. Getting shut out twice in three games is a major concern for any MLB lineup, and for Toronto, this series was a clear reminder that the bats still need more consistency.
