NFL training camps are opening across the country, bringing the first real look at how offseason additions, draft picks and returning veterans fit into their teams’ plans.
The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers were the first teams to report, while every NFL roster is scheduled to be in camp by July 28. With preseason games quickly approaching, coaches will soon have to turn offseason projections into actual depth charts.
From crowded quarterback rooms to rookies competing for immediate roles, here are five of the most important NFL training camp battles to follow in 2026.
Michael Penix Jr. vs. Tua Tagovailoa
The Atlanta Falcons enter camp with one of the league’s most fascinating quarterback situations.
Michael Penix Jr. is working his way back from the ACL injury that ended his 2025 season, while Tua Tagovailoa handled most of Atlanta’s full-team work during the spring. Falcons quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt said the competition could not truly begin until both players were healthy enough to be evaluated under the same conditions.
That makes Penix’s availability one of the biggest stories of camp. Atlanta invested heavily in him as a potential franchise quarterback, but Tagovailoa’s experience and early advantage in the offense give him a legitimate opportunity to win the job.
The Falcons will have to decide whether Penix’s long-term upside outweighs the stability Tagovailoa could provide immediately.
Kyler Murray vs. J.J. McCarthy
Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell continues to describe the Vikings’ quarterback situation as an open competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy.
Murray enters camp with a major experience advantage and appears to be the favorite. His mobility and ability to create explosive plays could add another dimension to an offense built around Justin Jefferson.
McCarthy, however, still represents a significant investment for the organization. He will need to show that he can stay healthy, protect the football and consistently operate O’Connell’s offense.
Most observers may view this as Murray’s job to lose, but Minnesota still needs to determine whether McCarthy can become part of its future. Every practice rep will matter as the Vikings decide which quarterback gives them the best chance in a competitive NFC North.
Jacoby Brissett vs. Gardner Minshew vs. Carson Beck
The Arizona Cardinals may have the most unpredictable quarterback competition in the NFL.
Jacoby Brissett, Gardner Minshew and rookie Carson Beck all enter camp with a realistic path to playing time. Brissett performed well after taking over during the 2025 season, throwing for 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions across 14 appearances. His contract situation and limited offseason participation, however, have created uncertainty.
Minshew received significant work during voluntary practices and brings plenty of starting experience. Beck, a third-round rookie, offers the most long-term upside and has spent much of the summer studying the offense and preparing for his opportunity.
Brissett may still have the inside track, but the Cardinals are beginning a new era under Mike LaFleur. If Beck performs well during camp and the preseason, Arizona could be tempted to accelerate its transition toward the future.Shedeur Sanders vs. Deshaun Watson
The Cleveland Browns enter training camp with another major decision at quarterback.
Shedeur Sanders received an extended opportunity during his rookie season, but his inconsistent play left questions about whether he is ready to become Cleveland’s long-term starter. He now enters his second NFL training camp with a chance to show improved decision-making, accuracy and command of the offense.
Deshaun Watson gives Cleveland a more experienced option, but injuries and inconsistent production have made his future with the organization uncertain. The Browns know what Watson has accomplished during his career, but they must determine whether he can still provide the level of play needed to lead the offense.
This competition is about more than deciding who starts Week 1. Cleveland must determine whether Sanders can develop into its quarterback of the future or whether Watson remains its best option for another season.
Kirk Cousins vs. Fernando Mendoza
The Las Vegas Raiders will have one of the NFL’s most closely watched rookie-versus-veteran quarterback competitions.
Fernando Mendoza enters the league as the top overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft and the player Las Vegas hopes can become the face of its franchise. His size, accuracy and ability to operate from the pocket give him the tools to compete immediately, but the Raiders do not necessarily have to rush his development.
Kirk Cousins provides the organization with an experienced alternative. The veteran has played in several offensive systems and could give Mendoza time to adjust to NFL defenses without immediately carrying the pressure of turning around the franchise.
The Raiders must decide whether Mendoza is ready to lead the offense from Week 1 or whether beginning the season behind Cousins would be better for his development.
