Marlins Hand Ohtani First 2026 Loss in 2-1 Win

The Miami Marlins handed Shohei Ohtani his first loss of the 2026 season despite another strong outing from the Dodgers’ right-hander, who continued his early-season dominance on the mound. Ohtani entered the start undefeated and among the league leaders in run prevention, but Miami capitalized on limited opportunities and received enough pitching support to secure a 2–1 victory over the reigning World Series champions.

Ohtani’s performance itself was not the issue. The right-hander worked six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) while recording nine strikeouts and continuing to show elite command. One of the two runs scored against him marked just the second earned run he had allowed over roughly 30 innings this season.

However, the Dodgers’ offense failed to provide sufficient support, managing just one run late in the game and leaving Ohtani on the hook for the loss. Los Angeles’ lineup was unable to match Ohtani’s effort. The Dodgers produced minimal offense throughout the game, scoring their only run in the later innings and failing to string together consistent threats.

Notably, Ohtani did not hit in the game as part of workload management, removing one of the team’s most productive bats from the lineup and further limiting offensive output. The lack of run support proved decisive, turning what was another quality start into a loss.

Miami’s pitching staff matched Ohtani’s effectiveness. The Marlins limited the Dodgers to a single run and controlled the game late, with the bullpen closing out the win and preventing any comeback opportunities. The performance highlighted strong command and situational pitching, particularly in high-leverage moments against the middle of Los Angeles’ order.

For the Marlins, the win represents a disciplined and timely performance against one of baseball’s most dominant arms. For Ohtani, it serves as a reminder that even strong outings require team-wide execution to translate into wins.
