The Round of 16 continues with two massive matchups that feel much bigger than this stage of the tournament.
Spain and Portugal meet in a heavyweight clash between two neighboring powers that could easily feel like a semifinal or final. Then Team USA gets a chance to make history on home soil against Belgium, especially with major news surrounding Folarin Balogun’s availability.
At this point in the World Cup, nothing is easy, nothing is guaranteed, and every match has the chance to become one of the defining moments of the tournament.
Spain vs. Portugal
Perhaps it is a long way to come for these two nations, separated by the longest border in Europe, to go at it on the pitch. But this is the Round of 16 at the World Cup, where the heat gets turned up.
By all accounts, Spain remains one of the top favorites, while Portugal stands as a top dark-horse favorite. Portugal and its golden-age players have waited for this time to come, but they probably did not expect to face Spain this early in the competition. This feels more like a semifinal matchup than a Round of 16 clash.
This match is actually Goliath vs. Goliath, with both teams equally matched in nearly every aspect, from top players and chemistry to two of the best midfields in the entire tournament.
These teams bring trickery, ideas, creativity, and joy to the pitch. The only thing that differentiates the two countries is the language. But on this day, the language will be the same, and it will be the ball.
The ball will determine everything. Where and how players move, the pace of the game, possession, and scoring chances. This is a language players of this level speak in their sleep and understand with their teammates even with their eyes closed on the field.
It is a language beautifully and magically filled with suspense, highs, and lows. Regardless of how wonderful each team may be, only one will be moving on.
It seems from one game to the next, everyone is saying, “This is going to be the biggest game of the World Cup.” Well, it likely will be until the next game, of course, as the 2026 World Cup is in full force, capturing the thrill of victories and the agony of defeat.
The stars will be shining on the career of Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal and on the future of Lamine Yamal for Spain. But both teams’ greatness exists in the three- and four-player combinations, along with breathtaking individual moments that never fail to amaze.
FIFA’s No. 3 ranking vs. FIFA’s No. 7 ranking will meet in Dallas for what should be an unforgettable World Cup match.

United States vs. Belgium
Both Belgium and the U.S. Men’s National Team won their groups and went on to win close-call matches in the Round of 32.
Team USA beat FIFA-ranked No. 64 Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0, scoring the second goal after going down a player following the red card send-off of star striker Folarin Balogun.
There is breaking good news that Balogun’s red card suspension has been lifted, and he is eligible to play. This is the first time in World Cup history that something like this has happened, and this new development now has American fans cheering with hope and not asking any questions about the decision.
Belgium’s camp was livid, thinking it was an April Fool’s joke in July.
Belgium played FIFA-ranked No. 15 Senegal and came back from two goals down in a thriller, beating them 3-2. In a risky move, Belgium’s two top players were subbed out early in the second half, which ignited the comeback and eventually paid off.
It is expected that both De Bruyne and Doku will be back in the lineup, freshly rested and eager to redeem their status.
In a pre-World Cup match, Belgium beat the U.S. 5-2, but neither team was at its best, and neither team had its full squad on the pitch. Belgium knows that, which likely explains why they are not making much noise about the last matchup. Instead, they realize the difficulties ahead.
Apparently, the odds are in the U.S. favor.
This seems weird, especially because Belgium has won six of the seven contests between the two nations, and the lone U.S. victory dates back 94 years to 1930.
The setting will be electrifying and familiar for Team USA, having beaten Australia 2-0 in Seattle at a very loud and raucous Lumen Field on Group Matchday 2. Belgium is not familiar with the stadium or the incredible U.S. fan support that is coming to be loud and proud from the moment the whistle starts the game.
Belgium is stacked, but they have not necessarily played well or consistently. The sign of a good team is that it still finds a way to win, even when playing poorly at times.
What that means is Belgium has so much to give and deliver, and it should be anticipated that they will bring it in the Round of 16, knowing it is either win or go home.
The U.S. has star power too, especially now that Balogun is back. Add Christian Pulisic on the wing, Malik Tillman controlling the midfield, Chris Richards securing the back line, and the U.S. team’s overall unity, and the Americans are ready to make soccer history on home soil.
The entire country is behind Team USA and, seemingly, the White House is as well. Our top person in charge apparently made a call to FIFA’s head person in charge, and the red card one-game ban was lifted for this match in particular.
There is no better chance than now for the U.S. to go all out and do everything it can to win and advance into the quarterfinals.
After seeing the other co-host nations, Canada and Mexico, get eliminated, nothing will be taken for granted. Everything is possible, and one could expect that the unexpected can still happen in this World Cup.
