Pro Paul’s Picks: Round of 16 Concludes With Messi, Salah

The Round of 16 concludes with two major matchups. Argentina takes on Egypt in a game already filled with headlines, trash talk, and superstar energy between Messi and Salah. Then Switzerland faces Colombia in a matchup that brings European precision against South American creativity, with both teams believing they have enough quality to reach the quarterfinals.

At this stage, every detail matters. The mental side, the tactical discipline, and the ability of star players to show up in the biggest moments can decide who moves on and who goes home.

Argentina vs. Egypt

This game has already begun before kickoff.

The trash talking has already started after Egypt’s assistant coach made it clear that they are not intimidated by Messi because they have Salah and “26 Messis.” The statement went viral, but some have questioned the context and purpose behind it.

The Egyptians defeated Australia to get here, but this game is a whole different level, and Egypt knows it.

It is going to be a physically demanding match for both sides. Tactics have been practiced and rehearsed to give each team its best chance on the pitch, but then there is the psychological side of the game, which is often the deciding factor.

That is why it should come as no surprise that direct comparisons and contrasting statements are going back and forth. The bottom line is that Argentina is better than Egypt, and Egypt’s best chance to win comes from building up the mental side, the belief system, and all-encompassing confidence.

Messi and company are ready, despite having the Blue Sharks from Cape Verde stay with them for 114 minutes before Argentina scored the decisive third goal that knocked Cabo Verde out of the tournament.

Egypt will need to keep its shape intact and not back down from playing its own game and style. Salah gives them a superstar presence and real attacking threat, but Argentina has the experience, balance, and championship mentality to handle the moment.

Pro Paul’s Pick: Argentina advances.

Switzerland vs. Colombia

This matchup feels very similar to Norway vs. Brazil, with Switzerland sharing some similarities to Norway and Colombia appearing similar to Brazil.

Typically, teams with stronger overall quality have advanced, but out of nowhere, players like Haaland and other stars have made a huge difference. Switzerland does not have a Haaland, but they do have two excellent wingers who can, and likely will, make a major impact on the game.

On the attack, the Swiss can slice up any defense with Johan Manzambi coming through the middle, Vargas working on the flank, and Breel Embolo doing the rest by picking apart the defensive block.

Colombia has players who are difference makers and thrive at every opportunity, so it is safe to anticipate that those guys will show up ready to play.

Colombia’s star player, Luis Díaz, could very well be the difference-maker for Los Cafeteros. He has played well throughout the tournament following an exceptional debut season with Bayern Munich. Alongside Díaz, Colombia also has James Rodríguez and Luis Suárez as dangerous support pieces in the forward line.

The Swiss are sharp and precise when on the pitch, but they now face a tough clash against the skillful and confident style of joyful South American soccer.

The big players need to show up for the big match and do what they do best in order for their country to advance.

Pro Paul’s Pick: Colombia advances.
