MLB Weekend Winners and Losers: Phillies Surge, Yankees Fall

Another weekend of MLB action gave us a better idea of which teams are starting to heat up and which ones are struggling to find consistency. The Phillies and Padres looked strong across all three games, while the Yankees and Angels had a weekend to forget. Here’s a look at the biggest winners and losers from this past weekend:

Winner: Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies put together one of the strongest weekends in baseball, taking all three games against Pittsburgh. Philadelphia opened the series with an 11-9 extra-inning comeback win, rallying late behind a huge night from Kyle Schwarber, who hit two home runs and drove in five runs. They followed it up with back-to-back 6-0 shutout victories led by pitchers Cristopher Sanchez and Zack Wheeler.

What stood out most was the balance across the weekend. The Phillies hit for power when they needed it, collected double-digit hit totals multiple times during the series, and consistently responded in key moments offensively. At the same time, the pitching staff tightened up as the series went on, ending the weekend with their most complete performance of the three games. Philadelphia looked aggressive, confident, and far more complete than they had earlier this season.

Loser: New York Yankees

The Yankees opened the Subway Series with a solid 5-2 win over the Mets, but things quickly fell apart after that. They dropped the next two games, allowing the Mets to erase a late three-run deficit Sunday before eventually walking it off in extra innings. Across the three games, the Yankees allowed 15 total runs, and their bullpen struggled badly in late-game situations, which became the defining story of the weekend.

Offensively, the Yankees were inconsistent throughout the series despite entering the weekend playing good baseball overall. They scored 14 runs while batting .238 as a team, but the main concern was their plate discipline, striking out 33 times. For a team with postseason expectations, losing games that way raises real concerns about late-inning reliability moving forward.

Winner: San Diego Padres

The Padres continued their strong stretch this weekend by taking all three games against Seattle and completely controlling the series with pitching and timely offense. San Diego allowed just 7 total runs across the three games and opened the series with a crisp 2-0 shutout win before following it up with victories powered by timely home runs and strong middle innings offensively. In Saturday’s 7-4 win, the Padres hit multiple home runs and piled up enough offense early to stay comfortably ahead the rest of the night.

What made the weekend impressive was how complete the Padres looked. The pitching staff consistently avoided big innings, while the offense continued to produce in key spots without needing massive hit totals. Across the series, San Diego played clean baseball, controlled momentum for most of the weekend, and once again looked like one of the more balanced teams in the National League.

Loser: Los Angeles Angels

The Angels had another rough weekend, getting swept by the Dodgers and allowing 31 total runs across the three games. The low Throughout the series, Angels pitching struggled to limit hard contact, and the team constantly found itself playing from behind before the middle innings even arrived.

Offensively, the Angels never generated enough consistency to counter those pitching struggles. They managed just 3 runs over the series, batting .158 without a single home run. The Angels will try to regroup quickly, but weekends like this show how much still needs to improve if they want to stay competitive moving forward.
